By the time that Cataclysm came along, they had separated out the map data into multiple files, so as to make it easier to stream the download of the game data, and also to improve performance.Īs such, objects, terrain, and texture data were separated out into 3-5 different files, alongside the normal '.adt' file that continued to contain the terrain data. The leaked map is incomplete, though - in many different ways. They ran it against a complete 'development.wdl' file, which resulted in a patched piecemeal version of the Development map that leaked in 2010. This week, some guys managed to build a tool that rebuilds missing map data from the WDL heightmap files. This thread should also be about the various leaked or unleaked development maps, since a lot of neat, weird, unique things can be found on them.

By 1999, Chris Metzen painted a mural of the entire World of Warcraft as it was in 1999, on one of the office walls. Prior to that, hiring for a new next-gen project started in late 1998.

Thanks to The WoW Diary, we know that the game was started as a scripted mod for WC3, in 1999. It would be interesting to find out when the game was really started - was it just an offshoot of WC3 or was WC3 intended to become an MMO from the start? vidmate mobdro Perhaps that's a remnant of the lava flow testing area? The picture I found (not mine) is very unclear but the description helps. Either way it was a big burnt out crater with a house in it. It's really hard to tell under the water that's been added, but from reading the Warcraft Diary last night it has a picture of Dead Man's Hole, and it seems to be a continuation of the Quel'thalas/Zul'aman spur of land based on the trees. I applied some water to it in my 'rebuild the alpha' project. Unfortunately, the converter (GillijimProject) doesn't seem to find the appropriate Area ID data, or it's decoding it improperly - I suspect that the area is the long-lost "Dead Man's Hole". One last little tidbit - the Azeroth_3_2.adt map data has an area id that isn't developer island. There's also a project to try and build a modern server for running 0.5.3 clients against.

Now that Noggit (map editor) supports WLQ water data, converted maps from 0.5.3 show the water as captured in the god-view for 0.5.3's developer island
